Sharm El Sheikh Airport
2 El-Salam, Qesm Sharm Ash Sheikh, South Sinai Governorate, EgyptFacts and History about Sharm El Sheikh Airport
Sharm El Sheikh International Airport, or Mar Sharm El Sheikh El Dawli, is located about 11 miles northeast of the Egyptian city of Sharm El Sheikh. As Egypt's primary vacation destination, the Red Sea coast's numerous hotels are served by the airport. After Cairo International Airport and Hurghada International Airport, it is Egypt's third busiest airport.
The current name of this airport is Sharm El Sheikh International Airport. Still, it used to be known as Ophira International Airport. It offers regular flights to Cairo, the capital of Egypt, and other places in Europe and the Middle East. Flights from Western and Eastern Europe, as well as Scandinavia, the Baltics, and Russia, make up the majority of air traffic in the central region.
There are two passenger terminals, each with a parking lot, public transportation options, and a taxi rank.
Terminal 1 (formerly known as Terminal 2) opened its doors to the public on May 23, 2007. It now has a yearly passenger capacity of 5 million. There are 40 check-in counters at the two-level terminal, designed to handle a wide range of international and chartered aircraft. At the airport, there are two domestic and six international terminals.
In 2004, Terminal 2 underwent a complete modernization program and could handle up to 2.5 million passengers annually. As of 2007, most airlines have moved their operations to the new Terminal 1 building.
The Egyptian Airports Company said in December 2016 that it intended to expand Terminal 2 to accommodate an additional two million passengers annually. Among other things, it included a new runway and 40 more airside. In 2019, more work was done to improve the facility's annual capacity.
An electrical or mechanical plant, sheds for security services, a mosque, a parking lot, and a wastewater treatment facility were all part of the infrastructure. There were plans to connect the new building's sewage system to an existing one. For irrigation purposes, the water would first be treated.
History of Sharm El Sheikh International Airport
On May 14, 1968, the airport was inaugurated as an Israeli Air Force station. It was reopened as a civilian airport in 1979, following the conclusion of the Egypt–Israel peace accord and Israel's subsequent departure from the Sinai Peninsula.
